GreenCLIMB – Empowering Women and Promoting Sustainable Climbing is an Erasmus+ Sport project focused on empowering women in climbing while promoting environmentally responsible and sustainable outdoor climbing practices. It responds to the growing popularity of climbing in natural areas and the need to protect the environments where the sport takes place.

The project combines environmental awareness, inclusivity, and female leadership in sport. It encourages responsible behaviour in climbing areas, aims to reduce environmental impact, and shares sustainability principles with climbers, coaches, and climbing communities. The international partnership includes OTI Slovakia, ACTIVE Austria, and Riverland Bio Farm from Cyprus. GreenCLIMB builds on the previously implemented CLIMBIT project from 2023–2025, serving as its continuation.

Project Goals:

GreenClimb seeks to:

  • Boost participation and confidence of women in climbing and outdoor sports
  • Raise awareness about the environmental impact of climbing
  • Support sustainable climbing practices aligned with nature conservation principles
  • Educate climbers, coaches, and instructors on eco-friendly behaviours
  • Create practical, lasting resources for the climbing community

Key Activities

The GreenClimb project is built around a combination of international learning, practical climbing experience, and local community engagement. All activities place strong emphasis on women’s participation, environmental responsibility, and knowledge transfer within the climbing community.

International Training Activities

The project will deliver three international training activities, hosted by the partner organizations in different countries. Each training will bring together approximately 15 women participants, including climbers, instructors, coaches, and active members of climbing and sports clubs.

The trainings will combine:

  • Educational sessions on sustainable and environmentally responsible climbing
  • Practical climbing workshops (indoor and outdoor, depending on location)
  • Discussions on women’s participation, leadership, and confidence in climbing
  • Exchange of experiences and good practices among participants and partners

🧗‍♀️ First Training – Austria (April 2026)
The first international training will focus on the foundations of sustainable climbing, introducing participants to eco-friendly behaviours, ethical use of climbing areas, and basic principles of nature protection related to climbing activities.

Local Climbing Events and Community Activities

In 2027, each partner organisation will organise local climbing events in their respective countries. These events will translate the project’s international learning outcomes into local action and involve the wider climbing community. These events aim to raise awareness beyond the project participants and to encourage long-term behavioural change within local climbing communities.

Project Results and Resources

One of the key outcomes of GreenClimb will be the development of a practical guidebook titled “A Guide to Eco-Friendly Practices”. The guidebook will provide:

  • Clear recommendations for sustainable climbing practices
  • Practical tips for climbers, instructors, and clubs
  • Guidance on protecting natural climbing areas while remaining inclusive and accessible

The project results and materials will be shared openly with climbing clubs, sport organisations, and the general public to ensure lasting impact beyond the project duration.
